This was much easier than I thought — and saved me a bunch of money. Thanks for the free help — although I feel a bit guilty for not sending something along.

  9. Soon as I get to safety with networking, it shuts itself down and makes me start over. :(
Is there a reason it’s doing that or can I not have the virus removed now?

  10. Update: Found the virus exe in AppData of the affected account. Filename was bxxvessmf44prli13bzqt.exe, loaded at 2:37 PM on Dec. 11, when the infection occurred. This name probably varies randomly — no references to it in Google.I deleted the file and should be clean now. The exploit may have relied on some Adobe Flash updates that occurred at the same time.

I’m surprised a virus this potent and sophisticated didn’t cover up its exe tracks better (by overwriting the file date and time). Perhaps it couldn’t do this, because the account had only user rights. If it lay latent for several days or weeks, the exe couldn’t be so easily targeted. Although it looks like a winlogon virus, I couldn’t find anything wrong with the winlogon entries in the registry. Don’t know how the virus works, but deleting the infected account (but not its files) disabled it..

  11. I got it yesterday (Dec. 11.). 64-bit Win7, IE9, surfing with nonadmin user account (NEVER surf the web with an admin account!). I was able to login with admin account, delete the user account and create a new one, being careful to select the option to preserve that user’s files. Thought I was protected by McAfee, but the virus disabled it. Removed McAfee and replaced it with Microsoft Security Essentials, which I downloaded from MS to a CD using a second computer. MSE scanned the computer but didn’t find the virus either, no report of malware having been removed. It’s possible it’s still on my computer somewhere but nonfunctional now that the account has been deleted. A manual check of the registry (looking for WinLogon entries) didn’t find anything suspicious.

This virus is very nasty, boot-up in safe mode doesn’t work. But it’s not capable of privilege escalation and that’s what saved me. Virus didn’t delete or encrypt any of my files, although it could have. It did prevent me from restoring from my last restore point — the system just hung and I had to power down.

If the virus infected an admin account, you’ll probably have to see a computer recovery expert to regain access to your computer and get rid of the virus.
